Tomorrow is June 1 and the first Tuesday of June. Again there won't be SnB knitting cafe, because the restaurant is closed again. Now we'll meet on June 8. It's unsure if I will be there, though.

There were a few questions about where to find former patterns. In the 'cloud' of subjects on the right of the main blogtext, there is the word 'pronkrol' somewhere. I label every message about this sampler with that word. Click on it and you'll have all patterns.

Here are the next patterns of our sampler. We'll have some movement in our patterns today. To begin with from bottom right to top left.
The pattern is simple, only knit, purl, ssk and yo are used. (ssk: I slip one stitch, knit one, pass slipped stitch over, but you can also use ssk, the result is the same. ssk: slip a stitch knitwise twice, put them back on left needle and knit them together through back loop)

First and last stitch of every row are knit again (garter st.) and patterns are seperated by knitting four rows garter st.

The pattern asks for 9 stitches in every repeat, plus two to balance the pattern. It looks best, when the pattern is in the middle of the sampler. At first I didn't worry so much about that, so my first pattern isn't centered properly. Later I paid attention to this. I have 47 stitches, for four repeats I need 36 stitches, plus the two ectra ones, which makes 38. Then there are the two selfedge stitches (makes 40) and so there are 7 stitches left. Those are knit: 4 on one side and 3 on the other.

Back rows are knit as the stitches appear: a knit stitch over a knit stitch and purl when the stitch below was purled. In the pattern parts that means: k 2 - p 7.

The symbols mean:
o = yo
\  = ssk
/  = k2tog
empty square = knit
- = purl

Pattern 5a is the same as the pattern in the book I've got. Now the fun starts. You can play with this pattern. The ssk need not be straight after the yo, but a stitch can be knit first. Or, if you reserved more stitches for every pattern repeat, more stitches can be knit between ssk and yo. A kind of ribbon appears next to the holes.(5b)
Instead of ssk, which leans to the left, you can also use k2tog, so movement to the right appears. Make yo and exra knit stitches after the k2tog and begin at the other side!

Finally you can try what happens, when you make the yo after the two purled stitches and keep them at that same place all through a pattern repeat. Only the ssk moves to the left. (5c1)
And when you go on by making the yo at the end of each pattern repeat and use k2tog instead of yo, you get a very pretty zigzag. (5c2)

Ajourbreien is toch zo leuk!

I haven't even talked about keeping the decreases (ssk and k2tog) in one place, and moving the yo's... Knitting lace is such fun!

Thank you all for your support! My eyes have had different colours by now (how apt in this mesage!) Now they are mainly orange/yellow. I'm sorry to say, that now my hand is very thick and blue. I thought I'd missed that wrist, but it turns out I didn't: when I do something with my right hand things go wrong. Therefore I have to keep quiet.
But the sun often shines and the weather is nice enough to go into the garden. Some weeds sometimes grow there. It has to be pulled out! Not good for head and hand. So: don't. Therefore a few pictures of the garden instead.
Under the white-pink combination the helebores are still growing. When you see the huge seeds we'll have plenty more of those!
On the other side of the white bush (of which I always forget the name) is a nice red maple.

A little further one of our many lilac trees has beautiful dark purple flowers.
The forget-me-not has no chance to be forgotten: there are clouds and clouds of the cheerful blue flowers.
Our little pond is lived in again. It's not easy, and you'll have to enlarge the picture, but our small frog is really there.
Jan was working in the garden, when another inhabitant of the garden sat down on his sleeve, a huge dragon-fly. He carried on working. Dragon-fly stayed where it was. He walked home. Dragon-fly stayed where it was. Then I took out my camera. Isn't he pretty?
De beuk krijgt ook blaadjes.
The beech is also getting leaves.
By now the clematis has so many flowers, but it was pretty here already, earlier this month.
It's easy to keep on taking pictures in May. I'll stop for today. More May-colours on Sue's blog, Life Looms Large

Vliegen

Flying

Afgelopen zondag, eerste Pinksterdag, probeerde ik of ik kon vliegen.
Ik kon het niet.

Last Sunday, Whitsunday, I tried if I could fly.
I couldn't.

All children and grandchildren were here and the weather was fine, so we were going to have a barbecue. I was busy from early in the morning, made salads and other nice things to eat for children and grown ups and finished in time for everybody to arrive.

We konden beginnen.
Even geen fijne handwerkjes dus.

All had just to be put on the table. The barcue was hot. One last time I walked from the kitchen to the table. In my hand the dish with the family's favorite potatosalad and a few more plates. We could start.
I didn't see the pair of shoes somebody had taken off and that were in the middle of my path.
On top of that youngest granddaughter was walking just in front of me.
I succeeded in missing it all. I stumbled, but succeeded in keeping the dish upright (you don't want to throw you work and the food on the ground, do you?) and only two of the plates broke. I missed the hot barbecue and the little girl. But I landed flat on my face and now I have two very thick, black/blue eyes, on places that shouldn't have that colour. It looks like I've been in a fight.
No fine knitting/lacemaking or weaving for the moment.

It could have been a lot worse (I say to cheer myself up)

Eindelijk weer...

After a holiday it's always hard to find back the old rhytm. The computer suffers; I hardly find time or mood to do anything at it and write blogs. I was having visitors or was out, I was too busy or too tired.

What it was, that kept me so busy? I tend to say: not really very much, but when I take a look at the photos I took meanwhile of some of my activities, it is surprisingly much. And I didn't take any pictures of my work in the garden, which takes up a lot of our time nowadays. Yesterday I started cutting our many box hedges. The smell when doing this makes it one of my favorite garden jobs.

But ok: some textiles, for a change.

Here is the Milanese lace dog: my last project at the lace school for the past season.

Dit is een kleurenfoto! Echt waar.

This is a colour picture! It really is! It's the lace piece I made on that lovely sunny French terrace. Technique used: chrysantemum technique (split spiders). When we were in Germany a few years ago one of the lace workers there showed me her work in this technique and since then I wanted to try it out myself to understand better what she was doing.

Of course I took some socks to knit. Pattern: Yarnissima's Firestarter. Yarn: Trekking XXL. I prefer to knit solid coloured socks now, but in this pattern the selfstriping yarn does give a nice result. I hadn't done much knitting in France, so the socks had to be finished at home. In May the Mystery sock May would start on SKA (Ravelry) and because the designer of those wouold be Cookie A I wanted to join that KAL.
Hier het begin van de mystery sock. Inmiddels heb ik de boord af.
Here the start of the mystery sock. I have finished the leg already now.

After knitting the Snow Queen I had some wool left. With that I made this triangular shawl in the 'bird's eye' pattern. For this see the site of Heirloom Knitting Although the pattern isn't simple I like it, because it's nice to finish up wool of another project like now. Ypu simply knit until all the wool has been used!

I think the colours of the Landscape dyes give a too light result. Therefore I dyed 100 grams of wool as dark as it wanted to be. I also span that and some of the Eastereggdyewool was spun as well. Photos another time.

2/2 keper.

Finally: the warp I made in December already was finally wound on my Toika. Here the start of the threading. By now all has been tied up, threaded and sleyed, ready for the most enjoyable part: weaving! The warp is made of an unknown slippery black material, of which I found a very big cone in my stash. Weft will be blue handspun merino. 2/2 twill.

What took most of my time, however, was reading the very thick books, written by Ken Follett. The first part, about building a cathedral in medieval England. I had with me in france, and now I'm reading the sequel, 1111 pages long! Never ending story. I think it's a good read, though, especially because the wool industry in those times takes a central part in the story. I enjoyed reading the descriptions about fulling the wool in the first part, and about dyeing and weaving in the second. The wool trade between England and Italy is also described. While I was reading it occurred to me that in those times the bank came in existance: it was too dangerous to travel such long distances with lots of money in your pockets, so families put relatives in one of both countries, that worked as a kind of bank.

Ken Follett: I. The Pillars of the Earth en/and II. World without End

Zo. Nu de laatste 150 bladzijden even lezen!
And now to read the last 150 pages!

Pronkrol deel 4 en 5

Sampler part 4 and 5.

Next Tuesday it's May 4 and because that evening memorial services are held all over the country, everything else is closed and so there will be no SnB knitting cafe that night.

Yet here the next instalment of the sampler, otherwise people might get withdrawal symptoms.

Again there are two patterns, that belong together. Actually they are again part of the series we had before. Many 'k3tog's again. I promise that will be different next month.

After four garter stitch rows (knit) you knit pattern A. Repeat it until you have don five pattern (lace) rows, which means 2 1/2 repeats of A.

Again knit four rows to separate the patterns, then continue with pattern B: here all odd rows are lace (pattern) rows. The even rows are purled in pattern A as well as in pattern B.
Don't forget to knit the selfedge stitches like you did before.
An empty square in te pattern is knit, a 'o' is a yarn over and the other symbol is k3tog. I must find a charting programme one day.

Now I'll quickly upload this message: by now I've typed it three times and every time something went wrong. Blogger doesn't really like our computer, I think!

Een kleurige maand: we zijn weer terug!

A colourful month and: we're back!

Sue of Life Looms Large has asked us again to show our colours of April I'm just in time.
Of course it was simple this month: my colours were white, red and rose. After all we were in a French wine area. But that would have been too simple. Besides I'd promised to show a few pictures of the Dutch tulipfields.
That used to be simpler several years ago. At present the tulips are hidden under ugly white cloth to protect them from cold and to speed up the production proces. This is taken off when the flowers are open and if you don't look in time the flowers have been taken off as well. Then everything is green again.
One of the first April days we looked out of our window and saw some red appearing.

A short time afterwards there was a lot more of it.

Nu is dus alles weer gewoon groen.

Now everything is green again.

But there is still enough to be seen a bit further down the road.

In the tulipfields people are searching for diseased flowers, which have to be taken out.

But for us the colours of the Provence were more important this past month.
De Mas/The Mas
(Met platanen en daarachter de Mont Ventoux/ with planes: thanks, Margreet, I ought to have known that! Behind the planes the Mont Ventoux)
Here, in front of the building, I spent most of the mornings, first making lace, later mostly chatting and knitting.
Kruiden op de markt/Spices on the market
 Olijven/Olives
 Provencaals aardewerk/Provencal potterie

 Meer kruiden/More spices
Kaas/cheese

I wish I could send the smells with this blog...

Everywhere the Mont Ventoux, with its white snowcap

Blogger changed the way to add photos while I was away. Complicated. I'll leave it at this for today.

In de zon

In the sun

It's surprising how lazythe Provencal sun makes us. Fortunately it shines almost all day here. At the campsite all kind of things are organised, so the need to go outside the gates of the site is little.

Talking two or even three languages in one conversation is pretty tiring as well. I spend the morning at the terrace of the 'Mas' and more women come together there, with their crochet or knitting, or just watching and talking. Mostly French, some Dutch or Belgian, and a few Germans. Writing a blog in Dutch/English now is a bit hard suddenly.

Yesterday it was market day in the village. Bedoin is a real southern French village (town?), with ochre coloured houses built close together on a slope, round a big church build high up on that slope. It doesn't seem big when you pass it by car, but yesterday we walked, took photos and, like I wrote, we visited the market. It was huge! It all looked very colourful and picturesque, with all the Provencal cloths, soaps, earthenware, herbs, cheeses, flowers and towering over all that the trees, of which I don't know the English name, the 'platanen' (in Dutch) And further up the always present Mont Ventoux. We won't quickly tire of all this beauty.

This afternoon we spent some time at the side of the swimmingpool again. The water is getting warmer all the time. If we'd stay a little longer I might even try to swim. Jan already did that. We also enjoy watching the little French swimmers or those who want to become that. There is a man, who teaches everyone who needs that to swim (better). He has an admirable amount of patience. This afternoon he even gave diving lessons (with oxygen bottles) to everyone who wanted. Fun to watch.

All together: it's just like holidays! ;-)
