De kleuren van augustus

Het is herfst. Het regent. Het waait, of liever: het stormt. Alles ziet grijs en grauw. Sue heeft gevraagd de kleuren van augustus te laten zien, maar de laatste paar dagen nodigden niet bepaald uit een rondje door de tuin te maken. Daarom wat plaatjes van eerder deze maand, toen de zon nog af en toe scheen.

It's autumn. It's raining. The wind is blowing, or rather: it's storming. Everything looks grey. Sue asked us again to send in our colours of the month, but the past few days didn't exactly invite us to walk arond the garden. Therefore a few pictures of earlier this month, when the sun appeared now and then.

Toen de zomervakantie begon, kwam Jasper bij ons met een heel klein plantje. Dat had hij van Juf gekregen, om in de vakantie voor te zorgen. Wat het was? Hij had geen idee. Wij wel. Hij vroeg, of het bij ons in de tuin mocht staan. Dat mocht. Samen met hem werd het plantje in de grond gezet. Jasper ging naar Spanje, vakantie vieren. Toen hij terugkwam, zag zijn plantje er zo uit.


When summerholidays began Jasper came to us with a very small plant. His teacher had given it to him, to look after durin g the holidays. What it was? Jasper had no idea. We had. He asked, if his plant could grow in our garden. It could. Together with him the plant was put into the ground. Jasper went to Spain, for a holiday with his parents and sisters. When he came back, he saw this.

Zo ziet het kleine plantje er nu uit. In de hoek rechts beneden is nog een puntje te zien van onze courgetteplant. Die ziet er ongeveer net zo uit als Jasper's pompoen. Leigh vroeg zich af, wat iedereen toch met courgette's doet. Ik zal proberen binnenkort wat recepten te geven hier. Maar één plant produceert al meer dan we kunnen opeten

This is what the little plant looks like now. In the bottom right corner the leaves are visible of our 'courgette' plant - I think it's zucchini or squash in English speaking countries. Leigh wondered, what people do with these. I'll try to write some of my recipes here soon. But one plant produces more than the two of us can eat.

De kleuren van juli

Het eind van juli is al weer in zicht, dus we hebben de tuin weer rondgelopen met de camera. Wat moet je kiezen? Er is zoveel in deze maand. Gelukkig hebben we in de loop van de maand ook foto's gemaakt, want de eerste planten zijn nu bijna uitgebloeid.
Sue heeft op haar blog Life Looms Large weer een oproep gedaan om onze kleuren te publiceren, dus daar gaan we dan.

The end of July is near already, so we walked around the garden with our camera. What to choose? There is so much this month. Fortunately we took pictures in the course of the month, for several plants have nearly finished flowering by now.
Sue of Life Looms Large has invited us to publish our July colours, so here we go.

Nog een plant, waarvan ik twee foto's maakte: de clematis, nog een van mijn favorieten. Deze is nu uitgebloeid, helaas, maar hij was prachtig!

Naast de waslijn groeide deze kaardebol. Hoger dan ik ben. Maar zo mooi. Is dit onkruid?

Next to my washing line this teasel (?) is growing. Taller than I am. Is this a weed? It's so pretty.

De rozen blijven maar bloeien. Hier een combinatie met lavendel.

Er is ook nog iets te eten: kruisbessen

and black currants.

Helaas: de vogels waren er eerder. We hadden nog geluk dat we op tijd waren voor de rode bessen en de frambozen...

Unfortunately the birds were there first. We were lucky because we were in time for the red currants and the raspberries...

De kleuren van juni

Sue van Life looms Large heeft haar maandelijkse oproep weer gedaan om de kleuren van onze junimaand te laten zien. Niemand in Nederland hoeft eraan te twijfelen: die kleur is oranje! Nederland is voetbalgek en het Nederlands elftal speelt in het wereldkampioenschap in Zuid-Afrika, dus alles is hier oranje gekleurd. Hoewel voetbal nu niet mijn grootste hobby is, ben ik zelf maar met het spinnen van oranje wol begonnen...

Sue of Life Looms Large has asked us again to show our colours of this month. Nobody in the Netherlands will doubt about it: June is orange! This country is mad about soccer (football) en the Dutch team plays for the World Cup in South Africa this month, so everything is coloured orange. Although soccer isn't really one of my favourite things to watch, I've started spinning some orange wool...

Of course that wasn't all I span, here the other colours as well:

Regenboog geverfde wol (Landscape verf, in de oven) links, naturelkleurige Ouessant wol in het midden, en twee paasei-geverfde strengen rechts.

Spacedyed (Landscape dye, in the oven) on the left, natural Oussant wool in the middle and two Easteregg dyed skeins on the right.

Bij het boodschappen doen, krijg je allemaal oranje dingetjes mee. Leuk voor de kleinkinderen. De huizen en straten kleuren oranje, met hier nog weinig, maar intussen al meer, oranje vlaggetjes. En het lijkt of iedereen oranje draagt.

When we shop, we get all kind of orange things given to us. Nice for the grandchildren. The houses and streets are orange, with, only a few here, but as time and matches go on, more and more arange flags. And it looks like everybody wears orange.

Ook de tuin doet mee.

Er zijn ook wat subtielere kleuren. Deze maand bloeien een aantal van mijn favoriete tuinplanten, waaronder geraniums en rozen. Hier twee collages - er is te veel om te laten zien. Klik op de foto's om ze te vergroten.

De kleuren van mei

Iedereen dank voor de steun! Mijn ogen hebben inmiddels al diverse kleuren gekregen (hoe toepasselijk in dit bericht!) Ze zijn nu vooral oranje/geel. Helaas is mijn hand nu nog wel erg blauw en dik. Ik dacht, dat ik die pols gemist had, maar dat blijkt niet het geval: als ik iets doe met mijn rechterhand, dan gaat het mis. Rustig aan dus.

Maar de zon schijnt vaak, en het weer is mooi om in de tuin te zijn. Daar groeit af en toe wat onkruid. Dat moet eruit! Niet goed voor hoofd en hand. Niet doen dus. Daarom wat foto's van de tuin in de plaats.

Thank you all for your support! My eyes have had different colours by now (how apt in this mesage!) Now they are mainly orange/yellow. I'm sorry to say, that now my hand is very thick and blue. I thought I'd missed that wrist, but it turns out I didn't: when I do something with my right hand things go wrong. Therefore I have to keep quiet.

But the sun often shines and the weather is nice enough to go into the garden. Some weeds sometimes grow there. It has to be pulled out! Not good for head and hand. So: don't. Therefore a few pictures of the garden instead.

Onder deze wit-roze combinatie groeit nog de heleborus. Aan de zaden te zien zal er veel zaad verspreid worden.

Under the white-pink combination the helebores are still growing. When you see the huge seeds we'll have plenty more of those!

Aan de andere kant van het witte struikje, waarvan ik de naam altijd vergeet, staat een mooie rode esdoorn.

On the other side of the white bush (of which I always forget the name) is a nice red maple.

Even verderop staat een van onze vele seringen prachtig paars te bloeien.

A little further one of our many lilac trees has beautiful dark purple flowers.

De vergeet-me-niet doet zijn naam aan: je krijgt nauwelijks de kans hem te vergeten, want er staan hele wolken van.

The forget-me-not has no chance to be forgotten: there are clouds and clouds of the cheerful blue flowers.

De kleine vijver wordt weer bewoond: het is een zoekplaatje, maar ons huiskikkertje staat er echt op.

Our little pond is lived in again. It's not easy, and you'll have to enlarge the picture, but our small frog is really there.

Jan was in de tuin aan het werk en een andere bewoner ging op zijn mouw zitten: een reusachtige libel. Hij werkte nog even door. libel bleef zitten. Hij liep naar huis. Libel bleef zitten. Toen nam ik de camera toch maar even. Is hij niet mooi?

Jan was working in the garden, when another inhabitant of the garden sat down on his sleeve, a huge dragon-fly. He carried on working. Dragon-fly stayed where it was. He walked home. Dragon-fly stayed where it was. Then I took out my camera. Isn't he pretty?

De beuk krijgt ook blaadjes.

The beech is also getting leaves.

De clematis heeft inmiddels al een zee van bloemen, maar hier was hij ook al mooi.

By now the clematis has so many flowers, but it was pretty here already, earlier this month.

Een kleurige maand: we zijn weer terug!

A colourful month and: we're back!

Sue van Life Looms Large heeft ons weer gevraagd onze kleuren van april in te sturen. Ik ben nog maar net op tijd.
Natuurlijk was het eenvoudig deze maand: mijn kleuren waren rood, wit en rosé. We waren niet voor niets in een Frans wijngebied. Maar dat zou te eenvoudig zijn. Bovendien had ik beloofd om wat foto's te plaatsen van bollenvelden.
Dat was vroeger simpeler dan tegenwoordig: de tulpen worden (om ze tegen de kou te beschermen, en om het productieproces te versnellen) verstopt onder lelijk wit doek. Als ze al bloeien gaat dat er pas af en als je even niet oplet, dan zijn alle bloemen er ook af. Dan is alles dus weer groen.
Begin april keken we uit ons raam en zagen plotseling wat roods verschijnen.

Of course it was simple this month: my colours were white, red and rose. After all we were in a French wine area. But that would have been too simple. Besides I'd promised to show a few pictures of the Dutch tulipfields.
That used to be simpler several years ago. At present the tulips are hidden under ugly white cloth to protect them from cold and to speed up the production proces. This is taken off when the flowers are open and if you don't look in time the flowers have been taken off as well. Then everything is green again.
One of the first April days we looked out of our window and saw some red appearing.

A short time afterwards there was a lot more of it.

Nu is dus alles weer gewoon groen.

 Maar er is verderop nog genoeg te zien

But there is still enough to be seen a bit further down the road.

In de tulpenvelden lopen de mensen te zoeken naar zieke exemplaren: 'ziekzoeken'

In the tulipfields people are searching for diseased flowers, which have to be taken out.

Maar voor ons waren de kleuren van de Provence deze maand belangrijker.

But for us the colours of the Provence were more important this past month.

De Mas/The Mas

Hier, midden voor het gebouw, bracht ik de ochtenden door met (eerst) kantklossen, later vooral met kletsen en breien.

Here, in front of the building, I spent most of the mornings, first making lace, later mostly chatting and knitting.

Kleuren van maart

Colours of March


Toen ik vorige maand de kleuren van februari fotografeerde, was het al de laatste dag van de maand. Toegegeven: er zijn er ook maar 28 van, maar dat werd even haasten. Buiten zag het er nog vrij grauw en winters uit.
De volgende dag, op 1 maart, maakten we een wandeling. Plotseling scheen de zon weer en dan ziet alles er anders uit. De wilgenkatjes tegen de blauwe lucht: het blijft ieder jaar weer mooi.

When I made photos of the colours of February, it was already the last day of that month. Admittedly there are only 28 of these, but I had to hurry to be in time. Outside it still looked grey and much like winter.
The following day, on March 1, we went for a walk. Suddenly the sun was back and everything looks different. The willow catkins against the blue sky: it's so pretty every year again.

We liepen in het kleine natuurgebied, vlakbij ons huis. Aan weerskanten water, want, in tegenstelling to Sharon, daar hebben we hier veel van. Hoog water links van ons, laag water, waar het dus wordt weggepompt, aan onze rechterkant, in de sloot.
We walked in the little narure area quite near to our hous. Water on both sides, because unlike at Sharon's, we have plenty of that. High water on our left in the canal, low water on our right in the ditch, where the water is pumped off.

Toen we thuiskwamen stonden de mahonies in hun potten te wachten om geplant te worden.

When we came home the mahonies were waiting in their pots to be planted.

 Deze week liep ik een rondje door onze tuin, om te kijken of er al meer kleur te ontdekken viel. Dit vond ik:
