Over mij

I'm a Dutch weaver, knitter, spinner, lacemaker and love anything that has to do with fiber and yarn. And of course I like to read books, magazines, newspapers.

Dichtbij plezier

Last Sunday we went out on a trip in the neighbourhood and had fun. It isn't always necessary to go far to have a good time.

First we went to a nearby village, Aartswoud, where there was an exhibition on sheep, how to breed them and about wool. As a spinner one has to go and see of course. At the entrance there was a poster with all breeds one can find in the Netherlands.

There was a tray with the wool of a number of these breeds

On a long strip of pictures the process of shearing could clearly be followed

There were old pictures of sheep, beautiful new photos and baskets full of wool, with the name of the breed clearly visible

Products made of wool and a lot of sheep, in various sizes

Newpaper cuttings with articles about sheep from old times

Outside two ladies demonstrated felting

Next we went to Hoogwoud, where knitting bags with tiny beads could be seen in the museum farm there.
 Het tassenbreien had veel belangstelling

Knitting the bags got a lot of attention

In the small, dark room, the work went on as usual.
Een hele voorraad gebreide tasjes en tassen

Quite a collection of knitted bags

Further on in the museum many differen old caps from the area.

At half a meter below sea level, as was painted on the street, we saw a lot of fine things on that sunny Sunday afternoon!

Grachtenfestival en Sail Amsterdam

Canal Festival and Sail Amsterdam

Like I wrote before last week was pretty hectic. Therefore now a report of a day we spent in Amsterdam, on the Thursday.
We were in the train early, as we had tickets for a concert of the annual Canal festival, in museum Hendrikje, museum of bags and purses.

The museum is worth seeing: it's a beautiful building. Building it started in 1664. Later painted ceiling and more renovations were added by the rich inhabitants. It's been a museum since 2007.

The outside of the museum, on Herengracht 573. The windows with the red curtains you can see in the pictures, are in the room, where the concert was held. Everywhere in town were these red flags, as here near the door, announcing an activity of the Festival. These were often in unexpected places, which you can't visit so easily normally. Often pretty small, too. Here was only room for 48 chairs. It felt like being at a 17th-century home concert.

We couldn't take pictures during the concert, but it was possible to take a picture beforehand of the painted ceiling, to give an impression of the room we were in.

The harpconcert was beautiful and exactly right for this place. The young harpist told enthusiastically about the pieces he played.

After the concert we walked to the place of the next concert we were going to in the afternoon: the Amsterdam public library. Also a beautiful building, quite modern, where I could easily spend a hole day each time I get there. But first we felt hungry: it was lunchtime. Walking past we saw there was an empty table on one of the most popular terraces of Amsterdam: De Jaren. So we ate in the sun, on the river Amstel.

In the library we didn't take any pictures, but we enjoyed the concert there, too, which was played by four enthusiastic musicians.

The library is on the IJ, the water where that day the Sail-in of Sail Amsterdam 2010 was. When we got outside this is what we saw: lots of people.

The building with the white roof is a modern music theatre. What all these people were looking at?
Boten.

Boats. Big ones, little ones, things that floated, but only just...

In any case there were a lot of them!

As a special treat for us one of the famous windjammers came in, while we were watching. This is the italian Amerigo Vespucci.

When we walked back to the station it hadn't finished yet: everywhere there were boats. But for us the day had been long enough and we'd done watching. Next year again, as far as the Canal festival goes and who knows: Sail again in 2015?
