Over mij

I'm a Dutch weaver, knitter, spinner, lacemaker and love anything that has to do with fiber and yarn. And of course I like to read books, magazines, newspapers.

D is voor?D is for...

Dyeing this week. In English this starts with D, in Dutch it doesn't. After last week's natural colours of the Queen Anne's Lace we used chemical dyes this time. With our spin group we spacedyed one kettle of wool by randomly sprinkling on red and blue Landscape dye, and another kettle got yellow (a nice browny yellow) and red.

After dyeing Jaqueline and Joke sorted the wool, so that each of us got an equal amount of coloured wool. Next time we'll see how each of us span the wool.

Our eldest granddaughter Wendy was there to help: she did the catering: drinks, biscuits, etc. And of course she enjoyed seeing the colours. Perhaps she'll dare to spin, too, next time?

After rinsing and drying I sorted the red and blue wool. I carded it in two layers, a red and a blue one. After that I spun it on my Rose.
Inmiddels is de wol ook getwijnd. Daarvan zijn nog geen foto's.
The wool has been plyed, too, now, but there aren't any photos of that yet.

D is also of double weaves. I love that weaving technique and have to make something new in double weave soon. These butterflies were woven in a double weave that is the same on both sides and the pattern was picked up with sticks. The pattern of the angels I found in a book of crochet patterns named 'Heavenly handwork'

This is another double weave, with the same A I showed before, but now in Finnweave, which is not the same on both sides. Lines can be woven here.

The same A again, but now in damsk, another technique beginning with D. Here also the pattern was picked up with sticks. Only four shafts are needed in all these techniques and a straight threading.

While I was looking for thes samples I wanted to take pictures of I also found my first sample of brocade. The pattern came from a book with Peruvian motifs to embroider.

I wrote in one of my other posts that the work was woven upside down. Well, here is all that you see. The ends of the pattern threads are just cut off. The plain weave of the background keeps the pattern in their place. You can see, that a new pattern thread is used when the distance of two spots of the same colour is too big. Long floats are often visible and don't look good.

Finally D is for dishcloth. This is the May 1 cloth of the Monthly dishcloth group.

And while we're talking about knitting: Here is my Mystic Light sjawl. It looked a bit small, but after blocking it's not too bad. It was knit with handspun merino.
