Over mij

Mijn foto
I'm a Dutch weaver, knitter, spinner, lacemaker and love anything that has to do with fiber and yarn. And of course I like to read books, magazines, newspapers.

Druk, druk druk

Busy, busy busy

The socks for which I dyed the wool and of which I described the process in my last blog, are done. They really came out the same.
Mooi! (al zeg ik het zelf)

Now I'm spinning the silk hanky I used as a wipe up cloth when I was dyeing. I really like it!

A while ago I also wrote about my 'flying sauser socks': the yarn was wound with a double end, and had to be rewound on two balls before knitting. Purpose was, that two the same socks would be made from this. They are done now and are more or less the same.

This morning was our last class of the lacemaking school. Time sure does fly! I'm going to miss this nice morniong, but in September we'll definitely go on again!
Last week we spent the morning making a happu Easter egg.

Before this the lace school made its annual schooltrip. A coach full of lacemakers went to the costume museum in Noordhorn and after that to the basketry museum in Noordwolde, both in the north of our country. We saw many beautiful things, heard a lot of interesting things and in the end of the day we made this. I looked the word 'mattenklopper' which we use for it up in the dictionary and didn't find it. Something like this was used to clean rugs in the past.

Another little piece of lace I made.

The weather was great this past week, so I was outside a lot. I hate to say that the ugly white plastic is stil on the tulips opposite our house. Through the plastic you can see they are flowering already. Soon the plastic will go, but no doubt so will the flowers...

Fortunately there was a lovely sunset this week: such beautiful colours. And suddenly the plastic mirrored these colours. It was almost beautiful, too!

My mother loved cooking. She liked to prepare a nice meal when guests were coming and she spent much time looking for the right recipe, buying the ingredients and preparing everything. All had to look nice when the guests were there.
But beware when unexpected guests arrived: 'I've got nothing in the house for them to eat!', she would cry out.
The rest of the family would answer: When you really search the house you'll definitely find enough to eat for a week!

I've got something similar: I keep saying, that I don't do a thing nowadays. But when I look well, I find that somehow things get done so now and then.

I was in my favorite LYS and the owner showed me undyed sockwool of Colinette. He wondered what it would look like when dyed, but he was afraid that I wouldn't feel like it such a short time before going into hospital.
Actually I always feel like dyeing things.
So a skein went home with me.
The wool was nice: 150 grams of merino wool, Jitterbug by Colinette.

I devided the wool in two equal parts of 75 grams and wound balls of them.

I used 5 mm knitting needles to knit them up, using two ends together. I cast on 40 stitches and knit plain till all yarn was used. The selfedges were three garter stitches on both sides, to prevent curling. The knitting only took an evening. Then I had to go into hospital and had no idea when this project would be continued. Fortunately that was pretty soon.

While the knitted piece was soaking in water and vinegar I prepared five colours of Landscape dye. I cut open a couple of polythene bags, put them on the table and the piece, which had been in my salad spinner to get out most of the water, went on top of that. I also soaked a silk hanky, which could serve to wipe up the dye that I spilt. The hanky could be spun later.

The dyed piece and hanky were steamed for about half an hour, rolled in plastic.
Hier het resultaat na het stomen.

Here the result after steaming
En hier na wassen en drogen.

And here after washing and drying.

I frogged the piece and again made two balls of the yarn.

Indeed: I'm getting two identical socks! By now the borders are done and I've almost reached the heel(s)
