A staat voor...: Alles is soms anders

Soms weet ik precies, wat ik in mijn blog wil gaan schrijven. Dan maak ik foto's met de bedoeling die te gaan gebruiken. Vervolgens gebeuren er allerlei zaken, of moet ik dingen laten gebeuren, zodat ik aan bloggen niet toekom. De foto's zijn dan niet meer actueel en eigenlijk zou ik nieuwe moeten maken, of ik gebruik het onderwerp helemaal niet. Dat was deze maand heel sterk het geval: we hadden het druk met kamperen, op kleinkinderen passen, tuinieren en het mooie weer nodigde ons uit te gaan fietsen of wandelen.
Sometimes I know exactly what I want to write about in my blog. Then I take photos to use with what I want to write about. After that things start happening, or I have to make (other) things happen, so that I don't find time for blogging. The photos are no longer up to date and actually I should take new ones or the item is not talked about at all.That was the case this past month: we were busy camping, looking after grandchildren, gardening, and the fine weather made us go out on our bikes or take walks.

Natuurlijk was ik zo nu en dan toch nog wel even met textiel bezig. Zo maakte ik beide 'vaatdoekjes-van-de-maand' in april. De eerste, zoals gewoonlijk effen, met een patroon van rechte en averechte steken, behorend bij de maand, vertoonde een zonnetje met daaronder wat bloemetjes van bobbels. Hier is het:
Of course I did some textile work so now and then. Here is the first April 'dishcloth of the month', as usual in one colour, with a pattern formed by knit and purl stitches, with a design that has something to do with the time of the year. A nice little sun this time, shining on a field of flowers, made of bubbles.

En hier is de tweede vaatdoek van de maand: een stuctuurpatroon in twee kleuren.

Ook de diverse sjaals vorderen gestaag. Het geheim van Bad Nauheim heeft hier vier clues, die herhaald moeten worden, tot de sjaal lang genoeg is.

The various KAL shawls grow steadily. Here the Secret of Bad Nauheim has four clues, which have to be repeated, till the shawl has the desired length.

Mystic Light is hier nog in wording, maar is inmiddels af en wacht om gewassen en opgespannen te worden. Deze sjaal lijkt nogal klein, vergeleken met de andere en de handgesponnen merino is een beetje dik en slap naar mijn zin. Misschien valt het mee na het opspannen.

Mystic Light is still on the needle here, but in reality it is ready to be washed and blocked. This shawl is pretty small, compared to others and the handspun merino is a bit too thick and limp to my taste. Perhaps it's better after blocking.

Gesponnen heb ik ook veel, de afgelopen paar weken. Ik was zo blij met mijn elektrische Roberta, vooral omdat het het twijnen een beetje minder inspannend maakte voor mijn knieën. Ik had dus een paar klossen vol getwijnd (merino en Clun Forest) en nu haspelde ik de volle klossen af, om ze te gaan wassen. Tot mijn schrik waren beide draden te weinig getwijnd. Ik had kennelijk niet goed genoeg opgelet. Het lijkt, of de klos heel hard draait, maar toch zeker niet hard genoeg. De Romney, die ik eerst op de Roberta had gesponnen en toen getwijnd (ook op de Roberta), zag er prima uit. Daarvoor had ik dezelfde instelling gebruikt bij het spinnen als bij het twijnen. Maar de andere wolsoorten had ik gesponnen op de Rose. Teveel twist voor deze twijnstand. De merino zag er zo veelbelovend uit: een gemeleerde blauw/purper getwijn met een effen blauw.
I span a lot as well, these last few weeks. I was so happy with my electronic Roberta, especially because it made plying less strenuous for my knees. So I plied a few WooLeeWinder bobbins full of merino and Clun Forest. I was shocked when I saw the result after skeining the wool. It wasn't plied very well: too little, to be exact. I must have paid not enough attention. These bobbins seem to turn around quite fast, but certainly not fast enough. The Romney I'd spun and plied on the Roberta was perfect. I used the same setting for spinning and plying. But the other wools I'd spun on the Rose, and they had too much twist for this setting. The merino had looked so promising: a lovely variegated blue/purple, plied with a plain blue.

Na enige aarzeling heb ik alles nog een keer getwijnd en hoera: nu ziet het er een stuk beter uit.
After some hesitation I plied everything a second time, and fortunately it does look a lot better now.

Nu Josephine af is, kan ik de rest van de geverfde wol opspinnen voor een ander doel. Waarschijnlijk ga ik er mee weven. Hiervoor twijnde ik de wol met zijde, nu ga ik de rest met zichzelf twijnen. Hier ben ik de wol aan het kaarden. Dat doe ik zeker twee tot drie keer. Duidelijk is te zien, dat ik maar heel weinig wol tegelijk toevoer. Kaarden mag niet veel inspanning kosten. Het plankje, waarop de wol wordt aangevoerd moet zichtbaar blijven!

Now that Josephine is ready I can spin the rest of the wool for another purpose. Probably I'll weave with it. The wool for Josephine was plied with silk, now I'll ply two singles of the wool. Here I'm carding the wool. That's done at least twice or three times. On the photo ypou can see how little wool is carded at a time: carding should go easy. You have to be able to see the board on which you feed in the wool!
