Het duurde even...

It took a while...

maar dan heb je een quilt

but then you've got a quilt.

12.5 jaar geleden trouwde onze dochter Annette met haar Taco. Reden voor een feest, dachten ze. De schrik sloeg me om het hart. Op hun trouwdag vroeg ik alle dag- zowel als receptiegasten een lapje te versieren, waarvan ik dan een quilt zou maken. Tot september vorig jaar, hun 12-jarige trouwdag, stond een doosje op mijn bureau, gevuld met die lapjes.

12.5 years ago our daughter Annette married her Taco. Good reason for a party they thought. I panicked. On their wedding day I asked all guests to draw something on a piece of cotton. I was going to make these into a quilt. Until september last year a box, filled with those pieces, was on my desk.

Er moest dus gewerkt worden.

Some work had to be done.

Ik zocht een vrolijk gekleurd lapje voor ieder vierkantje en voor de rechthoekjes die de receptiegasten hadden gemaakt.en naaide steeds een combinatie vierkant-rechthoek met hun omringende lapjes aan elkaar. Die combinaties legde ik eerst maar eens uit op mijn bureau, waarop ze zo lang al hadden gestaan.

I found a merry piece of cotton to put around each square and rectangle and sewed one of each together. these rectangles I laid out on the desk on which they had stood for such a long time.

Ik liep er eens omheen, ging weg, keek later weer, veranderde wat, kortom: er moest worden gebroed. Tenslotte naaide ik lange stroken.

I walked around the desk, went away, looked again later, changed something, in short: it had to stew for a while. Finally I sewed thes rectangles into long strips.

Toen de strips aan elkaar genaaid waren, was de top af.

When the strips had been sewn together, the top was finished.

De tijd ging zo snel, dat ik vervolgens vergat foto's te maken. Er moest een vulling gekocht worden en stof voor een achterkant. De 'sandwich' moest gemaakt worden, alles doorgestikt een ophangsysteem aan de achterkant aangebracht en tenslotte een rand rondom. Welke kleur moest dat randje hebben? Blauw, net als de achterkant? Dagenlang lag de nu bijna 'affe' quilt in mijn beeld, met een blauw lapje, dat ik voor het randje wilde gebruiken.
Toch maar niet: het werd een ander lapje. Dat beviel beter en zo kon ik het geheel afmaken.

Time went so fast that I forgot to take any more pictures. A filling had to be bought, as well as a backing. The 'sandwich' had to be made and finally an edging chosen. Which colour should the latter be? Blue, like the backing? For days the now almost reay quilt was lying there with a blue cotton I wanted to use. it didn't please me, so I chose something else. That looked better and so I could finish this project.

De dag van het feest brak aan. Bij ons maken de buren een erepoort voor een bruidspaar, in de woonplaats van Annette en taco maken de buren 'het erf mooi'. De pergola was versierd met slingers en balonnen

The day of the party arrived. Where we live the neighbours make a 'gate of honour' but where Annette live the neighbours get together to make the whole yard 'pretty'. The pergola got streames and balloons

en er stonden potten met kerstbomen (met meer slingers en ballonnen) langs het pad naar de voordeur.

and pots with christmas trees (with more streamers and baloons) stood along the path to the front door.

Hier overhandig ik de deken op het feest. Veel van de aanwezigen van 12.5 jaar geleden konden nu hun werk terugzien

Here I present the quilt at the party. Many of the peoplepresent 12.5 years ago were present now and cold admire their own work.

 De volgende dag was er genoeg rust om alles grondig te bekijken

The following day there was enough time to look at it all in peace.

Dat wilde kleindochter Emmeke ook. Zij kon dat echt wel alleen!

Granddaughter Emmeke wanted to do that as well. And she could do that all by herself!

Het was veel werk in een toch nog korte tijd, maar het was het waard en ik ben tevreden met het resultaat. Nu heb ik dan weer tijd en rust voor nieuwe projecten.

It was a lot of work in a short time, but ir was worth it and I'm pleased with the result. Now I've got time a peace for new projects.
